Researchers led by Takashi Tsuji at Tokyo University of Science (TUS) succeeded in regenerating a fully functional hair follicle by transplanting a bioengineered hair germ. The hair germ was reconstituted from epithelial and mesenchymal cells of embryonic skin, and epithelial cells of adult bulge region.

The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) found that Fibroblast growth factor 18 (FGF18) plays a key role in maintaining telogen, the resting phase of the hair cycle. Mr Toru Imamura and his team at the Biomedical Research Institute, AIST undertook knockout studies in mice, which revealed that FGF18 is the signalling molecules involved in maintaining telogen.
Fibroblast growth factors are involved in a variety of biological processes including cell growth, morphogenesis and tissue repair.
